HBCU Love: PantherXAI aims to create central AI hub at PVAMU

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – As artificial intelligence continues to reshape higher education and the workforce, Prairie View A&M University is working to ensure its campus explores it together, not in isolation.

Across PVAMU, students, faculty, and staff are already experimenting with AI in classrooms, research, and daily workflows. But until now, those efforts have largely taken place independently, without a central space to connect ideas, share practices, or learn from one another.

PantherX: Infinity AI, also known as PantherXAI, was created to change that.

The University-wide initiative brings visibility and structure to how AI is being used and explored across campus, serving as a central hub where the PVAMU community can access resources, discover tools, and engage with AI in real-world contexts.

“It was created to promote AI across PVAMU by providing a single point of access for resources, ideas, and collaboration,” PantherXAI committee leadership said. “Its goal is to ensure that the campus community is not only aware of AI, but also has a space to explore, share, and engage with it in meaningful and responsible ways.”

PantherXAI is co-led by Charlene Stubblefield, Center for Instructional Innovation and Technology Services executive director, and Dr. Laurette Foster, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and professor of mathematics. The initiative is supported by a cross-campus steering committee that includes Jenell Paul, Shayla Jackson, and John Starne.

PantherXAI is designed to connect individuals across disciplines and highlight how AI is already taking shape throughout the University. Rather than focusing on a single platform or tool, it functions as a campus-wide framework that supports shared learning, experimentation, and collaboration.

“While interest in AI continues to grow, many students, faculty, and staff are exploring it independently,” PantherXAI committee leadership said. “PantherXAI bridges this gap by creating a space that highlights real examples, encourages conversation, and connects people across campus.”

The initiative’s next activation will take place April 21-23 with a three-day webinar series, where participants can experiment with AI-supported image creation, audio development, and other emerging tools. The sessions, themed around PVAMU’s upcoming 150th anniversary, are designed to demonstrate how AI can serve as a creative and reflective partner in teaching, learning, and innovation.

Through its framework of awareness, access, application, and advancement, PantherXAI creates multiple entry points for engagement across the University.

For students, that may mean sharing how they are using AI in their coursework or exploring how it could shape their academic and professional futures. Faculty can gain insight into how colleagues are integrating AI into teaching and research, while staff can explore practical applications that support efficiency and day-to-day operations.

Beyond individual use, the initiative reflects a broader goal: positioning PVAMU as an active voice in the evolving conversation around artificial intelligence.

“It is critical that PVAMU, and HBCUs more broadly, are part of this conversation to ensure that diverse perspectives are represented and that students are prepared to engage with and shape the future of technology,” PantherXAI committee leadership said.

Looking ahead, University leaders envision expanding PantherXAI beyond campus through a future conference that would bring together partners from across The Texas A&M University System, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and institutions across the state.

As the initiative continues to grow, it is expected to deepen engagement, increase collaboration, and further integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, and research across the PVAMU community.

“It will support emerging research, strengthen interdisciplinary partnerships, and position PVAMU as a leader in how institutions can organically and responsibly engage with artificial intelligence,” PantherXAI committee leadership said.
