OBIT: CAROLYN JOYCE WEST

Carolyn Joyce West, a woman whose life was as rich and nourishing as the meals she so skillfully prepared, passed away on April 15, 2026, in Dallas, Texas.

Carolyn Joyce West, a woman whose life was as rich and nourishing as the meals she so skillfully prepared, passed away on April 15, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. Born on August 25, 1954, in Marlin, TX.   She accepted the Lord at an early age at South Union Missionary Baptist Church in Marlin, TX.  She was a member of the Greater Golden Gate Baptist Church in Dallas, TX.   Carolyn’s journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unyielding spirit that touched all who knew her.

From her formative days at Marlin High School to honing her expertise in Culinary Arts in Austin, TX, Carolyn cultivated a deep passion for cooking that blossomed into a celebrated career. As the Cafeteria Manager for Dallas Independent School District, she fed not only bodies but also spirits, bringing warmth and care into every meal served. Her culinary artistry was one of her proudest accomplishments, matched only by the pride she held for her children.

Carolyn was a woman of vivid character: very straightforward, humorously candid, deeply caring and loving, God-fearing, and unafraid to share her opinions. These traits endeared her to many, shaping her into a beacon of strength and authenticity. Beyond her career, she found immense joy in entertaining her grandchildren, creating cherished memories with J’Maryae, Karter, Kysen, Kolby and Kayden—who brought light and laughter into her life.

Her family was the center of her universe. Carolyn leaves behind her beloved daughter, Tacoma Phillips; her cherished grandchildren, J’Maryae Washington, Karter J. West, Kysen Hall, Kolby Hall and Kayden Hall; her devoted brother, Pastor Sam A. Phillips, Jr., and his wife, Walterene; her loving sister, Alma Price and her husband, Reverend John Price; daughter in law,  Breyuna Robbins and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who were graced by her presence.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Ella Phillips; her beloved husband, Jerry West; her son, Jerry L. West; and seven sisters—Emma Taylor, Laura Massington, Ella Morgan, Freda Noell, Mae Smith, Queen Jones, and Shirley Smith—women whose memories she carried in her heart.

Her faith was the bedrock upon which she built her life, guiding her through every challenge and triumph. Carolyn’s legacy is not only in the skilled hands that prepared countless meals but also in the love she so freely gave and the strength she instilled in those fortunate enough to call her family and friend.

Services honoring Carolyn Joyce West’s remarkable life will begin with a viewing on April 22, 2026, from noon until 7 PM at Golden Gate Funeral Home, 4155 S R. L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas, TX 75224. A funeral service will follow the next day, Thursday, April 23, at 11 AM, held at Community Missionary Baptist Church, 2920 Fordham Road, Dallas, TX 75216, Pastor A.l. Banks.
