Obituary
Marjon Alicia King Christopher was born on January 5, 1949, to John Quill Taylor King, Sr and Marcet Hines King in Austin, Texas.
Marjon professed her belief in Christ at a young age and was a long time and faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She was actively involved with the Women’s Ministry, the 7 Table Tea fundraisers, and Old-Fashioned Sunday School.
Marjon matriculated through the Austin Independent School District and graduated from Austin High School. She continued her education at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1970. In 1971 she earned an Associate Degree in Mortuary Science from John A. Gupton College and worked as a licensed mortician and embalmer at King-Tears Mortuary, Inc until she retired in 2019.
Marjon was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated through the Pi chapter on November 25, 1967. Also in 1967 she was crowned Miss Fisk University and in 1969 she was crowned Miss Alpha Phi Alpha.
Marjon met and married the love of her life, Charles A. Christopher on August 12, 1972. To this union two children were born, Chris and Caryn and a bonus daughter, Melissa.
Marjon was involved in many organizations and was most at home volunteering in her community. Marjon served on the Board of Directors as Secretary and Historian for A Morning of Praise, Inc. for over 25 years. She worked diligently in monthly Board meetings to oversee the planning and implementation of the vision from the Lord given to Mrs. A. Raye Franklin to bring together women in Austin of all ages to experience the power of God through praise, prayer, worship, and outreach.
As a Golden and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Marjon’s service in the sorority spanned over five decades. After returning to Austin, she served the local chapter, Beta Psi Omega. She served in numerous capacities and on multiple committees including Rituals, Leadership Development and Membership to name a few. Among many interests, Marjon delighted in being involved in the community and volunteer efforts of the sorority. She enjoyed the annual Austin State Hospital Christmas Party, Community Shred Day and filling backpacks for the chapter’s adopted school, Oak Springs Elementary. One of her greatest joys was welcoming her legacy daughter Caryn into the sorority in 2019.
Platinum Member Link Marjon Christopher was a 51-year member of the Austin (TX) Chapter of Links, Incorporated. Marjon was a dedicated and very active member of the chapter. She served as the chapter’s Archivist for 30 plus years. In this position she maintained and updated the chapter’s history. Among the many talents she shared with the chapter were her computer skills and creative programs design, which she freely used to create the chapter brochures, programs for rituals, ceremonies, and new member induction. She loved and served as chairperson for the bi-annual Old School Fundraiser. Marjon graciously accepted the position of Liaison for Platinum and Alumna Members for the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated.
Marjon was a long time member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Dr. John Q.T. King, Sr. and Marcet Hines King, niece Nikki Campbell and her grandparents.
Left to cherish her memory is Dr. Charles A. Christopher, Sr., her husband of 50 years; son Charles A. Christopher, II (Jessica) Chicago, Il; daughters Caryn A. Christopher, Austin, TX, Melissa Thomas (Seward) Watauga, TX and special son, Kenneth Gerard (Kenny Que) Foster, Frisco, TX; grandchildren Anaijah, Seward, Jr., Parker, Josiah, and Austin; siblings, Dr. John Q.T. King, Jr (Sylvia) Katy, TX, Dr. Clinton A.T. King (Susan) El Paso, TX, Stuart H. King (Sonja) Austin, TX and Meagan Thompson (Mike) Austin, TX; nieces and nephews, Marlo King, RosCet Varner (Cal), Marjon King-Rich (Bobby), John Q.T. King, III, Claudia King-Shakur (Ishmael) and Brandon King (NaDine) and a host of dear family and friends.
The Marjon King Christopher endowment is being established in her honor to fund a music scholarship at Huston Tillotson University.
