Spelman College Student Selected for Study Abroad in Kisumu, Kenya

Tamyra Robinson, a Spelman College biochemistry major selected for study abroad in Kisumu, Kenya

Tamyra Robinson, a Spelman College biochemistry major on the premedical track, has been selected to participate in an intensive three-week study abroad program in Kisumu, Kenya, through Spelman College in May 2026.

The immersive international experience will provide Robinson with global exposure, cultural engagement, service learning, and academic enrichment as she continues her journey toward becoming a physician. The program is designed to strengthen cultural competency, global awareness, and understanding of communities beyond the United States.

A Louisiana native, Robinson’s academic journey reflects both excellence and perseverance. A 2024 Valedictorian, Co-Community Service Chair of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and a recently inducted member of the Spelman College Section of the National Council of Negro Women, she has demonstrated strong academic leadership and a commitment to service. Her pursuit of higher education has been supported through external scholarships, including organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, which have been instrumental in helping offset the cost of attending Spelman College. These opportunities have allowed her to continue excelling academically while preparing for the financial realities of advanced education.

“This opportunity allows me to broaden my perspective and deepen my understanding of communities different from my own,” Robinson said. “As a future physician, cultural awareness and global perspective are essential to how I hope to serve others.”

Robinson’s selection highlights the role of historically Black colleges and universities in preparing women for leadership, service, and global engagement. Spelman College, the nation’s number one HBCU, is internationally recognized for cultivating women leaders who create meaningful impact locally and globally.

As Women’s History Month approaches, Robinson’s story reflects the experiences of many high-achieving young women pursuing education, leadership, and service through global learning opportunities.
