WASHINGTON DC – President Donald Trump signed an executive on the last day of April promoting retirement savings access for American workers by establishing TrumpIRA.gov portal.

The EO stated TrumpIRA.gov “shall identify financial institutions that offer IRAs” with the criteria to provide a menu of investment options that include investment fund products or model portfolios, including life-cycle or targeted-retirement-date options or balanced funds; and funds that are designed to protect principal on an ongoing basis and that will maintain low administrative costs, with overall net-expense ratios, inclusive of operating costs, management fees, and administrative expenses.

The funds must also be those that do not impose minimum-contribution or balance requirements, while also being designed to increase public awareness of the opportunity for eligible individuals to make contributions to retirement-savings vehicles and receive the Federal Saver’s Match contribution while facilitating low-cost, safe, and informed retirement-savings decisions.

The launch date for the platform is no later than January 1, 2027.

The target audience for the platform is geared toward the estimated 56 million Americans such as independent contractors, self-employed individuals, part-timers, and small business employees—who lack access to traditional workplace retirement plans like a 401(k).

The TrumpIRA.gov portal will work alongside the existing Saver’s Match portal designed overall to help workers utilize the federal Saver’s Match (established under SECURE 2.0). Eligible low-and moderate-income workers who contribute to an IRA can receive matching government contributions of up to $1,000 per year.

The eligibility requirements is a maximum match rate of 50% of the employee’s contribution and qualify, single tax filers must earn less than $35,500, and joint tax filers must earn $71,000 or less.

What the TrumpIRA.gov is not is a “Trump investment account” as some have mentioned.

Overall, it allows for the ability to use the website/portal to compare approved private-company IRAs from sites like banks or investment firms.

The accounts will be managed by private financial firms, not by Donald Trump personally.

The EO also indicates the listed IRAs must have very low fees, no minimum balance requirements, and simple diversified investment options like index funds or target-date funds.

While the “TrumpIRA.gov” caused confusion because of “Trump” in the name thus sounding like a personal Trump-branded financial product, the EO simply describes a government information marketplace for existing IRAs.

Critics have argued the use of the president’s name on a federal retirement portal feels political or self-promotional, which is understandable.

Supporters of the portal have said even so, millions of Americans currently have no easy retirement savings access, and this will make it simpler and cheaper.

At the EO signing ceremony, Trump said “I’m thrilled to sign an historic executive order expanding access to high-quality retirement savings accounts for millions of Americans” adding “Every American worker” should have access to “simple, portable, low-cost” retirement savings. During the event, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the administration hoped to expand the idea further with Congress and Trump added that the plan should be bipartisan and “something everyone supports.”
