DALLAS, TEXAS — In a moment where leadership, mentorship, and cultural stewardship are urgently needed, the African American Museum, Dallas has announced the formation of The Mandela 12—a distinguished coalition of African American male leaders from business, banking, law, education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and social impact sectors—mobilizing to support Mandela: The Official Exhibition, opening June 13, 2026.

Designed as both a civic leadership initiative and an educational access movement, The Mandela 12 will help deliver transformative exposure to more than 6,000 Dallas-area sixth-grade students between August and November through curated educational experiences centered on the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela.

At its core, the initiative is about visibility, responsibility, and legacy.

“This is bigger than an exhibition,” said Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., Founder of the African American Museum, Dallas. “This is a movement to place the principles of courage, justice, sacrifice, and leadership directly in front of the next generation.”

The Mandela 12 is envisioned as a brotherhood of influence—leaders who understand that representation matters and that collective action can shape a city’s future.

The coalition will serve as ambassadors, fundraisers, advocates, and connectors—working to ensure that students from across Dallas, particularly those in underserved communities, gain access to this once-in-a-generation cultural and educational experience.

Mandela: The Official Exhibition offers an immersive journey through the life of one of the world’s most revered freedom fighters, tracing Mandela’s path from rural South Africa to political imprisonment, global advocacy, and ultimately the presidency. Through rare artifacts, multimedia storytelling, and interactive educational engagement, the exhibition provides lessons in resilience, diplomacy, reconciliation, and service.

For Dallas, The Mandela 12 is more than symbolic.

It represents a call for African American men in positions of influence to stand visibly in support of education, cultural memory, and leadership development.

Participating leaders will help:

  • Sponsor student access and transportation
  • Underwrite educational curriculum engagement
  • Host community conversations around leadership and justice
  • Serve as visible champions for youth empowerment
  • Build bridges between corporate, civic, and educational stakeholders

“This initiative reflects the best of Dallas leadership,” saidTerry Allen, National Male Nentor Advocate . “Nelson Mandela taught us that leadership is not about power—it is about purpose, sacrifice, and service. We want our young people to see those values alive in the men standing behind this effort.”

The African American Museum expects Mandela: The Official Exhibition to draw significant local, national, and international attention as Dallas prepares for heightened global visibility in 2026.

The Mandela 12 provides a uniquely local response: ensuring Dallas students are not merely spectators to history—but participants in its lessons.
