For years if you were hearing the sounds from the continent, Mother Africa and throughout the Caribbean diaspora in DFW clubs and the streets, it was more than likely coming from one source, DJ Queen Agnes, The Soul Selektress.
Hailing from the nation of Malawi in Africa, Agnes is many things.

Agnes Nkhata-Blackwood, is her alter ego, or regular everyday name before she transforms into her super hero form that brings music and cultural justice to all.
The Queen is also, after being an award-winning deejay, emcee, realtor, social entrepreneur and philanthropist, a loving mother. She’s the daughter of Helen Zimba, an award-winning social worker and activist, and Brite “The Live Wire” Nkhata a legendary African musician.

Queen Agnes has spent 15 years building an international footprint that reaches across the United States, the United Kingdom, Africa, and the Caribbean, earning recognition not just for her artistry behind the decks, but for the bridges she builds between worlds.
The Queen often weaves together her music and community building heritage by serving as an impromptu ambassador for the continent as she is involved in bringing officials from Africa to Dallas along with economic building opportunities.

“I’m not just building a career. I’m building a corridor — between Dallas and Lilongwe, between the diaspora and the continent, between the generation that planted the seed and the generation that will eat the fruit.” the Queen said.
She also oversees a school in her beloved Malawi. Timalechi Nursery School, founded by her grandfather. The school provides early childhood education to young children in communities with limited access to resources, and carrying on her grandfather’s legacy has given her role as cultural ambassador its most personal dimension.
In a country where opportunity begins at the earliest years, Timalechi — which means “this is our blessing” in Chichewa — represents a family conviction, passed down through generations.

In 2026, Queen Agnes joined 97.9 The Beat (Radio One Dallas) as the featured DJ on The Beat Invasion, a dedicated Afrobeats segment hosted by Spaceboi Fresh airing Sundays from 7 PM to midnight, with Queen’s signature Afro Fusion Mix at 10pm.
The show has quickly become a cultural touchstone for Dallas’s African diaspora community and Afrobeats fans across North Texas — a platform where the sounds of Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, and Lilongwe find a home on the American airwaves.
Tune in every Sunday as she brings the continent to DFW. All Hail Her Majesty on the 1s and 2s.
