October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mary J. Blige is in the Valder Beebe Show studios addressing; did you know Black women are 40 percent more likely to die from breast cancer than Caucasian women?

Grammy Award-winning artist Mary J. Blige was in the Valder Beebe Show studio to talk about the POWER of Sure, a new campaign with the African American Women’s Health Imperative to educate Black women on the importance of annual mammograms.

With health issues still top of mind for many people; singer-songwriter, actress and philanthropist Mary J. Blige is encouraging Black women to prioritize and act to achieve annual breast cancer screening ,starting at age 40.

Through the P.O.W.E.R. of Sure, Mary, along with the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), RAD-AID and Hologic, Inc. is helping to raise awareness about the disparities Black women face for mammography screening and encourage Black women to get screened.

The P.O.W.E.R. of Sure campaign is designed to address existing health disparities and associated mammography screening rates among Black women across the nation through:

Myth busters featuring common myths and facts about mammography screening
Additionally, as part of the campaign, Hologic funded comprehensive mammography screening programs at multiple healthcare facilities across the nation in areas of need – including sites in DC, Chicago, Denver and Seattle, among others – to help increase access to screening for Black women. These programs provide access to Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography exam, as well as diagnosis and treatment services for women who have breast cancer detected.-Mary J. VBS: Welcome Mary J. Blige. Mary J, you are a Grammy Award winning entertainer, a recognized actress, an award winning artist. I know you have many artistic projects on-going, but why are you taking time to be the spokesperson for The P.O.W.E.R. of Surecampaign to help educate women about their annual breast screening?

MJB: I’m connected because three women in my family passed away from different types of cancer. My grandmother passed away from cervical cancer, my aunt passed from breast cancer. I’ve got an aunt who passed away last month from lung cancer. I believe if they had access to P.O.W.E.R. of Sure campaign information or any type of related information in the inner city neighborhoods about cancer they would be ………
