South Dallas Cultural Center is focusing on the importance of voting when it comes to women’s rights, with the exhibit, “The Further We Roll, The More We Gain,” that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment that allowed women the right to vote.

Since COVID-19, the artwork can be viewed online and in person by appointment only and the display includes banners from Aram Han Sifuentes’ Protest Banner Lending Library and handmade flags from Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School (IRYWLS), where about 100 sixth-grade students helped with this project.

Candice Lindsay, an art teacher at IRYWLS, thought it was critical for young women to work on this project so they could understand history.

“It is such a wonderful honor to be able to have a voice and for people to hear it,” Lindsay said. “That’s one of the basics of our school, to show women they have a powerful voice to make a change in the world.”

Although the exhibit is virtual, Lindsay said she is excited to be able to show her students’ work to more people.
