A young brother recently asked, “Do we have to code switch or do 500% to succeed in corporate spaces — even when it’s not fair?” The answer is complex, but the short version is: Yes, we must play the game — but on our terms. So bring your excellence to the table, not for applause, but for access. Be functional, not emotional. Strategic, not submissive. Authentic, never a sellout. Look at Medgar Evers — he brought his brilliance and fire to the Civil Rights Movement, knowing the danger. His brother, Charles Evers, turned tragedy into triumph, leading boycotts that forced white-owned businesses in Mississippi to reckon with Black economic power. That was their version of “playing the game” — using strategy to make change without compromising the mission....
