Torres wants an informed electorate on May 26

On May 26, 2026, Texas voters will be going to the polls to decide the victors in the midterm primary runoff election held on March 3rd.

The victors will either coast to victory without an opponent in the general election or they will face an opponent in November.

While millions went to the polls, it was still a fraction of the nearly 20 million registered voters in Texas.

Pundits and others who work the polls during “every” election say a much lower turnout is expected for several reasons, including the Memorial Day holiday, and less excitement generated from the candidates.

According to Ruth “Truth” Torres, she was off and running once the results were in, instead of taking a break.

She knows the landscape and wants to make sure that voters in Texas District 5 of the U.S. House of Representatives are informed and knowledgeable about the work she has done and her commitment to being a strong voice.

That strong voice has been missing across the country, in several places.  A few seemed to be fighting the battle for many, while others were noticeably silent.

This could change, however, over the weekend when Democrats in Dallas County gather for an inaugural Dallas County Democratic Convention at Inspiring Body of Christ Church in Southern Dallas County.

Torres hopes to get voters energetic about all races and the need to vote for more candidates who are fighters and working in the best interest of all citizens.

In an exclusive interview, candidate Torres discussed her desire to be a fighter for her constituents.

During the primary election, the Dallas Morning News gathered responses from candidates for U.S. House District 5: Chelsey Hockett, Forrest Lumpkin, and Ruth “Truth” Torres. The Dallas Morning News sent questionnaires to candidates who provided the answers included here. Each candidate was limited to 200 words per question, but answers were not edited. 

Hockett and Torres came out on top and will face one another in the runoff election on May 26, 2026.  Here are Torres’ answers.

Is the country headed in the right or wrong direction? Why?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

America is in civil war. Ruth enlisted.

The fight is for democracy, to unrig systems of inequity for an accountable, competent government that works for the people, not the 1%.

Unchecked power has allowed the wealthy to buy seats for traitors to create laws making the 1% richer by making the 99% poorer and sicker.

Too many in Congress have violated their oaths of office with blatant disregard for our constitution and laws. Their commitment is to a person, their donors and their own greed to the detriment of Americans.

The failure to fairly tax corporations and the 1% has caused an out of control deficit and wealth gap that denies home ownership, healthcare and affordable living to millions of Americans.

Congress’ failure to maintain separation of powers has resulted in the President abusing his power in issuing economy destabilizing tariffs, using his office for personal financial gain, starting wars and attempting to colonize Venezuela and Greenland, using the military as a personal hit squad murdering dozens absent arrest or trial, sending the national guard and ICE to rip apart families and create domestic chaos denying due process rights and generational trauma to affected children, deny Epstein victims justice and more abuses daily.

The Supreme Court’s lack of ethics, shadow docket orders and decisions reveal clear bowing to political pressures undermine the courts validity.

Ruth’s commitment and loyalty is to God and the people; our families, our communities, our country. Ruth will keep her oath of office to defend our constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Ruth has already proven she will hold all accountable without favoritism for violating the law.

What is the biggest challenge your district faces and how would you address it from Washington?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

CD5 has many challenges.

1. Healthcare:

a. Implement single payer system, removing employers from Healthcare management and avoiding loss of benefits due to job change. Require quality core healthcare coverage with supplemental coverage available for purchase.

b. Regulate and limit prescription drug costs.

c. Protect Social Security & Medicare, expand Medicaid

d. Prohibit for-profit insurance providers to receive taxpayer funds.

e. Prohibit insurance companies from limiting who can be added to a policy; no more family relationship or age limit requirements.

f. Stop monopolies & privatization of medical facilities, stop medical deserts in rural communities.

2. Immigration Reform: humane with due process rights, strategic admission that fuels our economy, citizenship for Dreamers.

3. Living Wages: Increase min wage, decrease wage and gender gaps.

4. Affordable Housing: building to support home ownership. Prohibit corporate ownership restricting available inventory to drive up prices. Prohibit banks perpetuating red lining / race- based disparate loan practices.

5. Gun Safety: liability for weapons resulting in shootings, red flag laws, universal background checks, ban assault weapons and ghost guns.

6. Public Education: Improve results with proper funding, limit testing, prohibit vouchers and responsible use of tax dollars including retain public ownership of schools paid for with tax dollars.

7. Protect Individual Rights: Freedom of Speech, Due Process, bodily autonomy codifying Roe.

8. Legalize Marijuana: clear criminal backgrounds of marijuana convictions

What measures would you advocate to strengthen America’s economy?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

1. Congress alone should set tariffs benefitting American consumers and businesses.

2. STOP corporate welfare and monopolies; instead support small businesses and farms so competition drives down prices.

3. Fairly tax corporations.

4. Tax high wage executives above 50x their average worker to reduce wage gap and increase affordability.

5. Tax stocks (when used as assets for loans) (not applicable to 401k’s, Roth’s and similar retirement savings accounts).

6. Remove social security payroll tax cap.

7. Pass the Ultra Millionaire Tax Act.

8. Tax corporations and private equity firms that limit available housing inventory driving up prices.

9. Require commercial and investment banking to be separate.

10. Regulate Bitcoin. Hold operators accountable for impact to environment, electricity and water usage, prohibit utility costs to be imposed on local community.

What is the greatest foreign threat to America now, and how should we address it?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

This administrations SHOCK and AWE strategy is America’s greatest threat.

In 2025, our President carried out 622 overseas bombings (Iran, the Caribbean, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Iraq)- all without congressional approval- creating foreign threats, destabilizing economies with tariffs, eliminated US Aid, and destroyed decades of international relationships.

This President as well as the former President enabled what Holocaust scholars Omer Bartov, Amos Goldberg and many others have identified as genocide and war crimes in Gaza which worsen daily, now banning Doctors Without Borders and other NGO’s from serving in Gaza.

The President has started a war with Venezuela using the military to kidnap the head of state and his wife under the allegation of arrest warrant for drug trafficking just after pardoning the former Honduran President and drug lord and is attempting to colonize Venezuela and Greenland with threats to other Latin American countries.

This President has also had a great unifying impact on other countries whom have united against America to create systems (BRICS) to bypass and reduce dependence on and exclude the dollar from international transactions (SWIFT) which has dominated for the better part of a century.

America may be impacted for decades as a result of these military and economic actions absent immediate corrective action. We should address it by:

1. Electing new members of congress whom will uphold their oath of office and prohibit abuses of power, STOP the president from starting wars which send America’s sons and daughters to battlefields and creating animosity that generates national security threats.

2. Strengthen NATO alliances, adhere to international laws respecting the sovereignty of other nations and be a good global citizen, not a bully.

3. Rejoin WHO & reinstate US AID with greater oversight on use of tax dollars.

4. Rebuild international relationships.

What is the greatest domestic threat, and how should we address it?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

America’s greatest domestic threat is the implementation of Project 2025 coupled with decades of seats purchased for traitors in congress and the Supreme Court, whom pass laws to make the 1% richer by making the 99% poorer and sicker. These traitors have now violated their oaths of office allowing abuses by the Executive Branch without regard for our Constitution or laws.

Ruth will work to rebuild an improved democracy that better fulfills the promise of our constitution by championing reform for an accountable, competent government that serves the American people, not the 1%:

Americans are increasingly concerned about the affordability of housing and raising children. What do you tell Americans who fear they are being left behind?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

Americans are correct. We are left behind and sold out by traitors we voted for or allowed to be elected by not voting. Americans have been distracted by culture wars allowing the 1% to make huge wealth and power grabs with monopolies destroying affordability, small businesses and family owned farms.

VOTE for ethical, competent representatives without bias of party, religion, race, gender or amount of campaign money.

VOTE based on facts and TRUTH not lies and misinformation.

VOTE for the best interests of our families, our communities, our country.

Have you ever been arrested or been a defendant in any criminal proceedings? If so, please explain.

Ruth “Truth” Torres: No

Are you satisfied with the Trump administration’s approach to the Russia/Ukraine war? What would you do differently?

Ruth “Truth” Torres: NO. I would support Ukraine, unite with allies, impose significant sanctions on Russia and prevent additional Russian terrorist acts against allies, like the attack on the Poland railway taking supplies to Ukraine.

Other than divorce, have you ever been involved in any civil lawsuits or have you ever declared personal or professional bankruptcy? If so, please explain.

Ruth “Truth” Torres: Yes. As a result of being a whistleblower against government corruption since 2016 and experiencing extreme retaliation, there are multiple civil suits which necessitated filing bankruptcy in 2020.

Why should voters choose you over your opponent?

Ruth “Truth” Torres: Ruth is the only candidate for this seat that has consistently shown up and delivered results for the people of this district and Texas since 2016 at great personal sacrifice, without bias regardless of party, wealth, race or popularity.

From foster homes and being a 10th grade drop-out to raising 5 children as a single parent, Ruth offers resiliency, hard earned education, skills and experience to make impact on public policy that serves the people and small businesses of CD5, Texas and America while protecting our most vulnerable populations.

Ruth is already working to rebuild our democracy to better fulfill the promise of our constitution by championing reform for an accountable, competent government that serves the people, not the 1%, including:

Public Education: Ruth has been an aggressive public education activist in Austin against vouchers. Ruth sought recovery of $88M in misappropriated Dallas ISD bond funds submitting a complaint to enforcement agencies. Subsequently DISD Superintendent Hinojosa resigned & three trustees were not allowed to seek re-election. Ruth’s report also disrupted non-profits illegally buying school board seats for pro-charter/ pro-voucher candidates.

Public Safety: Ruth proposed legislation to stop street racing after 8 year old Olivia was killed, gained sponsorship and bi-partisan support resulting in HB2315, HB3212 & SB1766. Laws passed in 2021 protect lives across Texas.

Housing: Ruth confronted mismanagement of HUD funds and lack of housing discrimination legal actions by the City of Dallas benefitting city council campaign contributors resulting in dozens of additional affordable housing units in downtown and ongoing legal action for records to enforce accountability. Fighting Government Corruption & for Workers Rights: Since 2016, Ruth has lost $1.8M in personal income and experienced extreme retaliation fighting government corruption as a whistleblower which stopped DFW Airport from robbing hundreds of workers of wages and benefits.

DFW Airport contractor, Heaven Marie Diaz of Pursuit of Excellence Inc., was indicted for the least of the illegal actions (See: UD NTX, 3:23-CR-00144-N). The press releases from the IRS, DOJ and media coverage all fail to mention the employees Heaven Marie Diaz stole $3 Million in taxes from were DFW Airport employees.

Ruth continues to pursue accountability against dozens of local and state government officials of both political parties involved in the DFW Airport legal violations including Texas Governor Greg Abbott & Attorney General Ken Paxton in federal actions. Should the Trump administration have intervened in Venezuela?

How should we advance American interests in Latin America?

Ruth “Truth” Torres: NO. Trump’s use of the military to invade, bomb multiple cities and kidnap Venezuela’s President and his wife, killing at least 56, was an act of unauthorized war under the false premise of arrest warrant execution for drug trafficking just after pardoning the former Honduran President and drug-lord.

Whether this act was to distract from the failure to comply with a judicial order to release unredacted Epstein files, for oil reserves to financially benefit Trump and his major big oil donors, or to validate Russia’s violations of international law by invading Ukraine by duplicating seeking to colonize Venezuela and Greenland while threatening other Latin American countries; the action was not authorized by Congress and violates many international laws.

America should build relationships with Latin America which comply with international law, respect sovereignty, and are economically mutually beneficial to stop drugs and mass migration into America.

What reforms, if any, would you support to increase accountability of social media platforms and artificial intelligence companies?

Ruth “Truth” Torres:

1. Fairness Doctrine and Truth in all media forums, including political advertising.

2. Require implementation of rating system for all content (X, R. PG, G ) with liability for posters who fail to accurately self-rate and liability to platforms for failing to monitor and administer to protect vulnerable populations. We should observe the impact of Australia’s social media ban for under 16-year-olds for future consideration.

3. AI regulation, required disclosure, and liability for use of AI which harms Americans personally or our business interests.

America should be hosting meetings with ethical IT leaders to develop legislation that promotes innovation while responsibly limiting the dangers of AI with accountability to those who use AI to harm American interests. Legislation must require disclosure of use with liability via enforcement by federal agencies and court actions comparable with intellectual property.
