The Great Nikki Giovanni left indelible mark

Nikki Giovanni and Cheryl Smith

The iconic, dynamic, and brilliant Nikki Giovanni died on Monday, Dec. 9, following her third cancer diagnosis, according to a statement from friend and author Renée Watson. She was 81.

A poet, writer, educator, activist. spoken word artist – she was an inspiration to many.

An honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she graduated with honors from her grandfather’s alma mater, Fisk University. She taught for more than three decades at Virginia Tech, and she has several books — with one expected out next year.
