A heated redistricting hearing at the University of Texas at Arlington revealed deep divisions over a plan to redraw five congressional districts in Texas, despite no official map being shared.
Before the hearing, protesters gathered outside, waving signs against the Trump administration and the redistricting effort. Inside, many attendees held signs and refused to lower them, creating a charged atmosphere.
Senator Royce West addresses Texas House Representatives, raising concerns about the fairness and legitimacy of the state’s redistricting plans.
State Senator Royce West called the moment “a sad day in Texas.” He criticized the secrecy around the plan, asking, “How did Trump come up with the number five seats when no maps have been drawn?” He called the process “a conspiracy.”
Chaplain Rich Stoglin, president of the Frederick Douglass Republicans of Tarrant County, spoke in favor of the redistricting, arguing that communities of color have suffered despite spending. His support was met with boos.
Representative Christian Manuel clashed with Stoglin over the history of redlining, calling Stoglin “a little disingenuous.” The exchange was cut short, adding to the tension.

Pastor Frederick Douglass of Friendship-West Baptist Church condemned the plan as “tyranny” and “fascism,” emphasizing time and time again that this fight is about justice and how the redistricting targets Black and Brown districts with “surgical precision.” His passionate testimony earned a standing ovation.
