Threats against our HBCUs—including Clark Atlanta University and the wider Atlanta University Center—are a chilling reminder that even sacred spaces of learning and progress are not immune to hatred and intimidation.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with the students, faculty, and staff at Clark Atlanta, Spelman College, and all institutions impacted.
To Spelman’s community, we recognize the fear that comes when warnings are issued and shelter-in-place orders are given, even when your campus was not directly threatened. Your caution, your vigilance, and your commitment to one another exemplify the resilience our people have carried for generations.
Let us be clear: attacks—whether in the form of bombs, bullets, or threats—will not deter us from the pursuit of education, excellence, and empowerment. HBCUs are more than colleges; they are the bedrock of our culture, our history, and our future.
We demand swift and thorough investigations, accountability for those who spread terror, and increased protection for our schools. But we also call on our community to respond with unity and determination. As we pray for safety and peace, we must also continue the work of building strong, safe, and supportive institutions for our children and our children’s children.
We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced. We will not stop.
